Andropause: Why So Many Men in Their 40s and 50s Feel Tired

A lot of men come into our office asking the same thing: “Why am I tired all the time and why do I have no motivation?”

On top of this, they’re often also experiencing low sex drive and low muscle mass, even when they’re working out regularly.

Many men assume this is just aging or stress. However, sometimes, hormones are a big part of the picture.

So What is Andropause?

Andropause, sometimes called late-onset hypogonadism, is a term used to describe age-related testosterone decline in men. Testosterone naturally decreases over time, usually starting in the 30s and 40s. For some men, that drop becomes significant enough to affect how they feel physically and emotionally.

Symptoms of low testosterone include:

  • fatigue

  • low libido

  • reduced muscle mass

  • brain fog

  • poor sleep

  • low motivation

  • mood changes

Is Andropause like a Male Menopause?

Well, yes and no. Both are caused by an age-related decrease in hormones. However, menopause is a dramatic shift that happens in a smaller amount of time and often causes severe, obvious symptoms. Andropause, on the other hand, typically manifests slowly. The result is that andropause’s symptoms are more subtle, which is why andropause is so underdiagnosed.

What Role Does Testosterone Play?

Testosterone plays a much bigger part than most people realize. It affects energy, mood, focus, muscle health, metabolism, and sexual function.

When levels drop too low, men may feel worn down even if they’re trying to eat well, exercise, and “push through it.”

The good news is that low testosterone is easy to evaluate with symptoms, medical history, and lab work.
